The Minister of Defence Award of Excellence to Industry 2009
The Defence Industry Committee of New Zealand sponsors the Minister of Defence Awards of Excellence to Industry on an annual basis. Nominations were called from the New Zealand Defence Force and other organisations with an interest in providing equipment and services to Defence.
Twenty nominations were received for the 2009 Awards.
The awards dinner was held in Wellington at the Duxton Hotel on Wednesday 14 October. Hon Dr Wayne Mapp Minister of Defence was the guest speaker and he presented the awards.
Category A: Award of Excellence to Industry – Contracts for the supply of equipment or provision of services in excess of $7 million
These awards are for major suppliers of equipment or services to the New Zealand Defence Force or Ministry of Defence and may include major subcontractors or service suppliers.
Category A Winner
Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace) – Nominated by the Ministry of Defence. Mobile Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and Engineering & Development Centre (EDC) Divisions undertook the design to modify two New Zealand Defence Force B757-2K2 passenger aircraft to a multi-mission, combination configuration. EDC took the lead in the design, integration and certification. MAE’s engineering department managed the overall programme.
ST Aerospace stood out with its innovative and adaptive engineering design for the first-of-its-kind Boeing 757-200 combi aircraft, and is one of the few MRO providers in the world with an in-house aircraft design engineering capability. Their products broadened the RNZAF’s strategic airlift capabilities and have been proven effective and functional. This award is a testimony of their expertise, experience and engineering finesse.

Category B: Award of Excellence to Industry – Contracts for the supply of equipment or provision of services below $7 million
This category recognises subcontracting and supplier companies that provide excellent service in a variety of ways.
Category B Winner
New Zealand Ocean Technology Limited – Nominated by the RNZN for the provision of professional services, remote helpdesk and onsite support for Mine Counter Measures Equipment.
It was abundantly clear that the work that Mr Ron Tyson does for the RNZN is driven by passion, enthusiasm, dedication and considerable personal commitment. He has delivered some world leading technology, NZ tailored solutions at extremely competitive costs.
Mr Ron Tyson regularly deploys onto the ships in order to develop the capabilities of the equipment that he provides, help establish working procedures, provide on-going training assistance and other general support. This award is a testimony of his expertise, experience and dedication.

Category C: Award of Excellence to Industry – New Zealand based Subcontractors to Overseas Prime Contractors
This category recognises New Zealand suppliers who have provided overseas prime contractors with a high level of service and provided the New Zealand Defence Force, through the prime, with exceptional outcomes to the contract.
Category C Winner
BECA Applied Technologies Ltd – Nominated by Ministry of Defence, L-3/IS and RNZAF for providing software support for the P-3 Systems Upgrade project and software engineering support for through life of P3-K2 for the RNZAF.
The dedication shown by the BECA Applied Technologies (BAT) team, from the outset should be a shining example of effective “partnering”. During many phases of the project the workload increased to a frenetic pace and the BAT team stepped-up working some very long hours on numerous occasions.
Proactive, honest, open, trustworthy, the praise for the team was a consistent message from all area. A very deserving winner of the Category C Award.

Category A Finalists
PAE (New Zealand) Limited – Nominated by the Manawatu Defence Hub for the provision of professional facilities management at Linton Military Camp.
Category B Finalists
AB Industries – Nominated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force for the capability upgrade and refurbishment of the Trailer Aircraft Side Loading (TASLU) for the RNZAF.
Auckland Shipbrokers Limited – Nominated by the RNZN for the provision of specialised marine brokering service for the disposal of decommissioned naval vessels.
Opus International Consultants Ltd – Nominated by the JLSO NZDF for the provision of professional services to the NZDF on the infrastructure component of the IEDD/EOD Capability Project.
Superstructure Group AP Ltd – for the supply and support of specialist intelligence analysis software (SID) for the NZ Army.
VT Fitzroy Ltd (Calibration Centre) – Nominated by RNZAF for the management, calibration and repair of RNZAF Electronic Test Equipment (ETE).
Category C Finalists
Global Aerospace Technology Corporation – Nominated by the Ministry of Defence for the design, manufacture and oversee of the installation of the multi-role cargo loading and seat pallet system for the B757-200 programme.
McKay Electrical Whāngarei Limited – Nominated by Richard Harrison, ICN, for 1. the supply of Electrical Distribution System for Off Shore Patrol Vessels including switchboards, cable, power and lighting. 2. The switchboard design and build, supply and installation of entire electrical distribution system for In Shore Patrol Vessels.
New Zealand Restorations – Nominated by RNZN for the provision of cleaning the ANZAC Frigate and HMNZS Endeavour’s ventilation ducts and installing inspection panels.
