Defence Review Consultation Summary of Submissions
Supplementary Questions: New Zealanders are also invited to comment on any other defence-related issues they regard as significant.
Many submitters used this section to expand on points made in relation to the earlier questions. Two areas that have not already been covered are noted here. The first is the accessibility of the Defence Force to the public. More access is suggested, especially in terms of available information and opportunities for the public to experience and participate in Defence Force activities and events.
Secondly, there can be significant regional economic impacts associated with the location of Defence Force bases. The location and possible relocation of Defence Force bases affected partnerships with local government and shared resources. It also had impacts on the demand for local employment and services that needed to be managed. Greater consultation and open cost benefit analysis was recommended before relocations were considered by the Defence Force.
"Mod and NZDF should publish more information, and be open to academic and public input into policy process."
"Defence must embrace all the population who are paying for it."
"The Defence Review must recognise the significant economic value its operations bring to local economies."
